We talk a lot about tourism in Wasaga Beach — and we should. Tourism matters to our local economy.

But we also have people who live here all year long. And some of our community, like me, may not be fans of snow or ice. I'll admit it now, a public confession - you'll never find me on a ski hill.

What are we doing during the colder months?

Winter in Wasaga can be isolating. Getting out isn't always easy when there's snow and ice, and not everyone wants to spend the evening at home.

I think we can do more with the facilities we already have.

For example: movies at the RecPlex.

🎬 Sunday Afternoon Family Movies

A family-friendly movie, affordable admission, kids' energy, parents having a chance to meet one another — maybe even an occasional sing-along.

🎬 Wednesday Afternoon Movies for Adults

Bring a coffee, meet a friend, get out of the house and enjoy a movie without having to drive to another community.

It doesn't have to be elaborate or expensive.

It just has to give people a reason to come together.

And because I'm thinking of finances, I do know that through our library, for example, we could borrow movies and documentaries from the National Film Board - for free.

My research indicates that a licensing agreement needs to be purchased to allow movies to be shown in a public forum - like the summer beach movie nights that currently exist. I'm waiting to find out from the people who know whether the licensing agreement is for a calendar year - when I know, you'll know.

And movies are only one idea.

We could look at ways to use our existing facilities to create more things to do during January, February and those long winter months.

Because tourism is important — but so is the quality of life of the people who call Wasaga Beach home all year.

We can't simply expect that feeling of community to happen on its own.

We have to work to make the small town vibe a reality.

What would YOU like to see happening in Wasaga during the winter?

Thanks for listening!
