I’m excited about the vision for Destination Wasaga and what it could mean for our community.

At the same time, I think we need to be realistic about costs, timelines, implementation and any potential burden on taxpayers.

I also want to be clear that there are elements of the plan that don't align with my own views about the future of Wasaga Beach.

That doesn't mean I dismiss the entire vision, or that my vision is the correct one. I am only one voice amongst thousands in this town we call home.

And we should remember what this is right now: a vision.

It exists on paper and in digital presentations. We are a long way from a finished product — and, depending on funding, approvals, partnerships, construction and other factors, we may be many years away from seeing some of these ideas become reality.

We also have to see what we can accomplish to improve Beach Areas 1 and 2 in a fiscally responsible manner while protecting the beachfront and environment, and ensuring that those businesses that depend on the tourism season to survive all year are given considertion. Some solutions can be inexpensive - but effective - like building hard top gazebos, available for rental for use by wedding parties, people celebrating a major milestone, or a family reunion. Picnic tables that are well maintained. Garbage and recycling that is removed on a regular basis. And Beach Ambassadors to greet guests, help out and ask a few basic questions so can gather data.

So before we get too far down the road, I think we should be asking:

💰 What will it cost taxpayers?

🏗️ What development is being proposed — and who pays for it?

🚗 Can our roads, parking and infrastructure handle it?

🏖️ How will public access to the beach and public spaces be protected?

🌿 What happens to our wetlands, wildlife and natural environment?

🏠 What does this mean for people who live here year-round?

🏪 How will existing local businesses benefit?

⏰ What is the realistic timeline — and what happens if it takes longer or costs more than expected?

📊 How will we measure whether the plan is actually working?

And perhaps most importantly:

What decisions are being made now, and what opportunities will residents have to have their say before those decisions become commitments?

If you're attending Thursday's meeting, I'll see you there.

Be excited about the possibilities. Ask the practical questions. And remember that a vision is only the starting point.

Let's make sure the future we envision is one that our community can actually afford, sustain and be proud of.

Thanks for listening!
