YARD SALE : WHAT IF WE MADE IT BIGGER?
PART 1
I love the idea of the Annual Great Yard Sale in Wasaga Beach.
It’s local. It’s fun. It gets people out into our neighbourhoods—and it gives things we no longer need a second life.
And let's face it...
Do you know a thrifter? Are you married to one? Did you grow up in a family where clothing was passed down from one child to the next?
Maybe you were that kid.
There is something wonderful about finding a treasure, getting a great bargain, or watching something you no longer need become exactly what someone else has been looking for.
That’s what I love about yard sales.
But I’ve been thinking...
What if we looked at the Great Yard Sale as more than a collection of individual yard sales?
What if it became a town-wide Wasaga Beach weekend experience? An Annual Event? An opportunity to clear out the junk room, or the basement, and give it a new home?
People could come from surrounding communities to spend the day exploring yard sales throughout Wasaga Beach.

They could have lunch at a local restaurant. Or there could be a restaurant that offers a "Thrifter's Boxed Lunch" - pick up & go and keep on thrifting.
Stop for coffee.
Discover a neighbourhood they’ve never been to before.
And maybe even stay overnight.
That’s where I see an opportunity for local economic development and shoulder-season tourism.
We already have the foundation. Residents are doing the work. The Town wouldn’t need to reinvent the wheel.
It could simply help connect the dots.
A town-wide digital map could show where participating yard sales are located. Local businesses could offer special promotions.
Community organizations and charities could participate.
And there’s another piece I really like: Reuse.
Every item that gets sold, reused or donated is one less item potentially going into the dump.
It’s a simple example of a community-based circular economy—and it starts with something as ordinary as cleaning out your garage or basement, or that spare bedroom where everything gets tossed in to be dealt with later.
Maybe "later" is the Wasaga Beach Annual Great Yard Sale.
I think there is an opportunity here to take something Wasaga Beach already does and make it bigger, more organized and more beneficial to our entire community.
So that's my question:
What if the Great Yard Sale became a destination weekend?
In Part 2, I’ll show you what I think that could actually look like.
